Meet the Working Dogs That Don't Take a Break for the Festive Season
It's the most wonderful time of the year for many, but for some dogs in Northern Ireland, it's just another day at work. These four-legged professionals keep their jobs year-round, ensuring their families have a merry Christmas filled with love, fun, and treats.
Assistance Dogs NI: Lucia Kane and Jojo
For Lucia Kane, 17, from Crumlin in County Antrim, Christmas can be a challenging time due to her autism and Tourette syndrome. Her support comes from Jojo, a seven-year-old black Labrador, one of Assistance Dogs NI's support dogs. Jojo senses rising stress levels and responds by lying close to Lucia, helping to calm her down. Her presence offers reassurance when things become overwhelming.
"I really do love her; she's one of my best friends," Lucia told BBC News NI. Her mother, Elizabeth Kane, added that Jojo transformed Lucia's life when she became part of the family five years ago, giving her confidence and helping her talk to people. "Her presence de-stresses any situation one million percent," Elizabeth said.
This Christmas feels especially precious for the family. Jojo recently recovered from a serious illness after swallowing a stone, which left Lucia distraught. Lucia didn't sleep or leave the house, but Jojo is now fully recovered and will be spoiled with extra gifts, including turkey and ham on Christmas Day.
PSNI: Igi and Kodi
In Londonderry, police dogs Igi and Kodi will be on duty over the holidays, just like any other day. Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Insp Neil Harrison explained that they will have a few rest days after Christmas to enjoy their presents and relax. Igi, a German Shepherd, is a general patrol dog who may be called to various incidents during the festive season. His tracking abilities can be invaluable in missing person searches.
Kodi, a Cocker spaniel, is one of the PSNI's newest search dogs and enjoys finding hidden items. Her work could involve locating drugs or weapons, helping the PSNI remove these items from criminals and prevent them from entering communities. After the Christmas shift, both dogs and their handlers will prioritize relaxation and rest.
Farm Life: Bowie
On a farm in Park, County Londonderry, sheepdog Bowie, a collie and Australian Kelpie mix, has been a vital part of farmer Thomas Conway's team for four years. Thomas emphasizes that a good sheepdog is worth 10 people on the farm, and Bowie is always busy, even on Christmas Day. He shares farm life with springer spaniels Bob, Lala, George, and Flo.
"We'll be out three or four times on Christmas Day," Thomas said. Bowie will join him on his morning rounds, checking livestock and sheep. The springer spaniels will work at a shoot on Boxing Day, while Bowie will have a more relaxed day. All five dogs will enjoy Christmas treats, including turkey, ham, stuffing, and bones.
