The UK government is taking decisive action to address the struggling water sector, with plans to introduce a new regulator. This move comes as a response to the sector's recent challenges, including sewage spills and supply outages, which have impacted tens of thousands of households in southeast England. The government has identified the privatized water sector as a broken system, citing years of under-investment as the primary cause for rising sewage pollution. The country's largest water supplier, Thames Water, is battling to survive under a heavy debt burden. The creation of a new regulator, combining several existing authorities, was first proposed in July, with the goal of ensuring better performance from water companies. Environment Minister Emma Reynolds emphasized that the new regulator will hold water companies accountable for poor performance, ensuring customers receive the service they deserve and investors see a future-oriented system. However, Thames Water has complained about heavy fines preventing investment in performance improvements. The government's 'Performance Improvement Regime' aims to assist underperforming companies in recovering more quickly. The new regulator will conduct 'health checks' on water companies' infrastructure, including pipes and pumps, with the authority to inspect without prior notice.
