UK's First Town of Culture: Coalville and Ashby's Potential Bids (2026)

Get ready, because two charming towns in Leicestershire are vying for a groundbreaking title: the UK's first-ever Town of Culture! This exciting competition, launched by the government, aims to celebrate the cultural richness found in towns across the nation, running parallel to the established UK City of Culture contest. Bradford clinched the City of Culture title for 2025, and now, the spotlight turns to towns eager to shine.

Both Coalville and Ashby-de-la-Zouch have thrown their hats into the ring, expressing keen interest in becoming the inaugural Town of Culture in 2028. Amanda Hack, the Labour MP representing both towns, has already pledged her support, signaling the strong community backing for these bids.

The government is sweetening the deal, offering a substantial £3 million prize to the winning town. Two runners-up won't go empty-handed either, each receiving £250,000.

But here's where it gets interesting: to ensure a level playing field, the competition will recognize towns of all sizes. The three finalists will include one small town (under 20,000 residents), one medium town (20,000 to 75,000 residents), and one large town (over 75,000 residents). This inclusive approach promises a diverse and exciting competition.

Ashby-de-la-Zouch is already brimming with enthusiasm. Chris Smith, the Ashby Town Council leader, highlights the town's vibrant arts scene, its picturesque location in the National Forest, and its rich literary heritage, including a mention in Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe. He also humorously points out that Adrian Mole's girlfriend, Pandora, was an MP for Ashby-de-la-Zouch.

Coalville, with its deep roots in the coal mining industry, is also eager to showcase its unique identity. The North West Leicestershire District Council recognizes the potential of both towns, emphasizing Coalville's focus on regeneration and its rich heritage. They are considering the Town of Culture competition as a valuable opportunity for the town.

Towns have until March 31st to submit their expressions of interest. The strongest contenders will then move on to a shortlist, receiving £60,000 to refine their final bids. The winning town will then enjoy a year-long celebration of culture, starting in 2028.

What do you think? Which town do you believe has the best chance of winning? Do you think the prize money is sufficient to make a real difference? Share your thoughts in the comments below – let's get a conversation going!
