A's Sign Tyler Soderstrom to Record-Breaking $86 Million Contract Extension
Tyler Soderstrom is having a holiday to remember. The 24-year-old left fielder has just signed a seven-year, $86 million contract extension with the A's, making it the largest guarantee in franchise history, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. The deal includes an eighth-year club option, potentially maxing out at $131 million.
This extension surpasses the previous record held by Brent Rooker and Lawrence Butler, who signed deals worth $60 million and $65.5 million, respectively, before the 2025 season. The A's previous high mark was $67 million, given to Luis Severino.
Soderstrom, a first-round pick in 2020 from Turlock High School in California, had a breakout 2025 season. He recorded a .276 average and an impressive .820 OPS, with 25 home runs and 93 RBIs across 561 at-bats and 158 games. This was a significant improvement from the previous year, where he hit .233 with a .743 OPS in 61 games.
Soderstrom started the year as one of the league's top hitters, hitting nine home runs and .284 by the end of April. He was also tied for fourth in the league in homers through the first month of the season, behind only Aaron Judge, Cal Raleigh, and Eugenio Suarez.
Initially drafted as a catcher, Soderstrom transitioned to first base for the majority of the 2024 season. He split his time between first base and left field last season. Soderstrom is part of the young core the A's are building, alongside American League Rookie of the Year Nick Kurtz and Jacob Wilson.
