A dangerous road in Suffolk is at the center of a heated debate, with a campaign calling for a speed limit reduction gaining traction. The 'Cut It To 40' initiative aims to address the hazardous conditions on Debenham Road, a rural route that has become a notorious 'Grand Prix track' for commuters.
The campaign, led by Simon Oldfield, has been advocating for a speed limit change for months, following a string of serious accidents and injuries. Oldfield and his supporters, John Jones and Adrian Spong, met with Suffolk County Council to discuss the matter, and the council leader, Matthew Hicks, has acknowledged the possibility of a speed limit reduction.
But here's where it gets controversial... While Hicks suggested a potential reduction to 40 mph in certain areas, he stated that Debenham Road itself may not qualify for a 30 mph limit. This has sparked concerns among locals, who believe the current 60 mph limit is 'ridiculous and dangerous'.
Oldfield expressed his fears, saying, "There will be deaths if no action is taken." He added that the road's winding nature, with its sharp bends and multiple entrances, makes it a high-risk area, especially with the high volume of commuter traffic.
And this is the part most people miss... The campaigners have identified 37 safety hazards along the two-mile stretch of road, including five road junctions and nine sharp bends. With almost 80 locals supporting the petition, the issue is gaining momentum.
The Suffolk County Council has shown willingness to collaborate with the Earl Stonham Parish Council to improve safety. A council spokesperson said, "We are aware of the concerns and are open to exploring options, which may include signage improvements and a potential speed limit change."
