The US Space Force has awarded a groundbreaking $52 million contract to Starfish Space for deorbiting satellites, marking a significant milestone in space debris management. This contract, the first of its kind, aims to revolutionize end-of-life disposal services for constellations in low Earth orbit (LEO).
Starfish Space's innovative solution, named Otter, offers a cost-effective and efficient approach to satellite servicing and disposal. By utilizing Otter, constellation operators can extend the operational life of their satellites while ensuring responsible end-of-life management. The US Space Force's PWSA constellation, comprising hundreds of satellites, is set to undergo a transformation. Traditionally, the military has relied on a limited number of highly capable but expensive spacecraft. However, this new approach introduces a large satellite constellation, enhancing resilience by making it more challenging for adversaries to disable the entire system. This shift in strategy raises important questions about the balance between maximizing investment and managing space debris.
Starfish Space's Otter technology has already shown promise. The Otter Pup 1 trailblazer, launched in June 2023, successfully maneuvered within 0.6 miles of a target space tug, demonstrating its capability for precise orbital maneuvers. Additionally, Starfish software has been integrated into Impulse Space's Mira orbital transfer vehicles, achieving remarkable proximity to another Mira. The upcoming Otter Pup 2 mission, scheduled for June 2025, will attempt the first-ever commercial satellite docking in LEO, further showcasing the technology's potential.
The first Otter missions are set to launch this year, providing valuable operational experience before the Space Force's debut disposal mission. This contract not only highlights the technical readiness of Starfish Space's Otter but also opens up new possibilities for satellite management and end-of-life disposal in LEO.
