Chinese EV maker Nio's Firefly brand just unveiled a stunning, yet controversial, move: a limited-edition Firefly EV, with only 99 units available. But here's the twist: it's not just about exclusivity. This special edition, designed in collaboration with Dutch artist Jordy van den Nieuwendijk, comes with a premium price tag, 20% higher than the standard model. And this is where it gets intriguing for consumers and investors alike.
The limited-edition Firefly EV starts at RMB 95,800 ($13,750) under the BaaS plan, with a monthly battery rental fee of RMB 399. This is a significant RMB 16,000 more than the regular Firefly EV's BaaS starting price. But the catch? The battery pack is not included in this price, indicating it may only be available for rent.
Firefly's standard models, by comparison, start at RMB 119,800 and RMB 125,800, including the battery. This limited edition's unique selling point is its artistic flair, featuring van den Nieuwendijk's signature flying horse design inside and out, and even on the Nio Life store's themed merchandise. And this is the part most people miss: it's a clever strategy to boost brand visibility without breaking the bank.
Firefly has been busy since its debut in April 2025, with deliveries in China, Europe, and a right-hand-drive version in Singapore. Previous limited editions like the Nomadic Maillard and Night Creature have already hit the roads.
