Age is just a number when passion still burns bright! Even as a seasoned cyclist, Nairo Quintana is proving that his ambition for podium finishes is far from fading, much like a dog's keen sense of smell that endures through the years.
This past Monday, at the Tour of Oman, the Colombian veteran, Nairo Quintana, was tantalizingly close to clinching his first race victory in four years. He launched a powerful attack on the final ascent of stage 3, only to be narrowly overtaken just 300 meters shy of the finish line. It was a moment that surely had fans on the edge of their seats!
Now embarking on his third season with the Movistar team, Quintana is currently positioned within the top 10 of the General Classification. With the final stage, a challenging 6km climb featuring a steep 10% gradient up Green Mountain, still on the horizon, there's certainly more excitement to come.
Quintana shared his immediate focus: "Try to always be at the front with Diego Pescador to try to win the overall with him." But his sights are set even further. He expressed a strong desire to compete in the Vuelta a España this year. "I really like the Vuelta a España; it's a great stage, and I've always done well in the summer," he explained, adding that he's also open to participating in the Giro d'Italia if that's the team's plan.
But here's where it gets interesting... Quintana emphasized the team's overarching goal: "The team's objective must be to win big races again." He highlighted the development of younger riders, mentioning Iván Romeo and Carlos Canal, and now the emerging talent of Diego Pescador. "Little by little, our riders are establishing themselves... we have to think about the future, but also about the near future." This blend of nurturing new talent while still aiming for top-tier victories is a delicate balance many teams strive for.
And this is the part most people miss: While Quintana's personal ambition is clear, his focus on the team's future, even in his own twilight years as a competitor, speaks volumes about his leadership.
