In a significant development for Liverpool Football Club, sources have revealed that the team has reached a preliminary agreement with Rennes to bring in young defender Jérémy Jacquet this summer, with the deal estimated at £55 million ($74 million), along with an additional £5 million ($6.8 million) in potential add-ons. This promising 20-year-old player is viewed as an essential component in Liverpool's ongoing efforts to strengthen their defensive lineup.
Interestingly, Chelsea had also shown interest in Jacquet and had even negotiated a fee, expecting smooth sailing regarding personal terms. However, complications arose when they chose to recall center-back Mamadou Sarr from Strasbourg and turned down offers for Josh Acheampong, which changed the dynamics of the deal.
Jacquet, on the other hand, seems to favor the opportunity at Liverpool, as he anticipates more playing time there compared to other clubs. The need for defensive reinforcements at Liverpool has become increasingly urgent, particularly with Ibrahima Konaté and Andy Robertson both facing uncertain futures as their contracts are set to expire this summer.
Liverpool previously attempted to secure Marc Guéhi from Crystal Palace last summer, agreeing on a £35 million ($47.8 million) transfer, but the deal fell through at the eleventh hour when Palace pulled out. In a twist of fate, Guéhi has since signed with rivals Manchester City earlier this month.
Additionally, Liverpool explored the possibility of acquiring Dutch international Lutsharel Geertruida, currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, during the January transfer window. However, they chose not to move forward with the deal after Sunderland couldn't find a suitable replacement for him.
This season has proven challenging for Liverpool, plagued by numerous defensive injuries. Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are confirmed out for the remainder of the season, while Joe Gomez and Jeremie Frimpong are also unavailable. Currently, under the management of Arne Slot, Liverpool sits in 6th place in the Premier League standings, trailing leaders Arsenal by 14 points and just two points behind Manchester United, who occupy the fourth position.
With these changes and challenges ahead, how will Liverpool’s defense evolve in the coming months? Will Jacquet be the missing piece they need to rejuvenate their back line? Share your thoughts below!
