Get ready for a thrilling ride as Genesis, the UK's adventure and touring bike specialists, have just unveiled three exciting prototype bikes at the IceBike show in Manchester! One of these prototypes is set to become the new Genesis Equilibrium, an all-road model that's sure to turn heads. But here's where it gets controversial... Genesis is taking a unique approach to their frame design, utilizing different strength steels in specific areas to optimize the bike's performance.
Ryan Carroll, the chief engineer at Genesis' parent company Madison, explains that they've moved away from the traditional super-premium, ultra-stiff front triangle. Instead, they've combined materials strategically, resulting in a more intriguing and responsive ride. The focus areas include the down tube, bottom bracket, and chain stays, which have been custom-made in Japan by Genesis' supplier.
"This is a very premium heat-treated steel," Carroll says, emphasizing the attention to detail. The chainstays, made from heat-treated chromoly, work in harmony with the downtube to deliver precision and power. Moving up, the top tube is chromoly, providing that classic smooth feel that steel enthusiasts love. And to complete the package, there's a new carbon fork attached to a sizeable head tube, with a 1 1/4-inch taper to maintain proper proportions.
The bike is optimized for 40mm tires and wireless, electronic groupsets, with only the rear brake cable running through the frame. This setup ensures a sleek and efficient riding experience.
As for pricing and availability, we're still in the dark. However, we can expect the new Equilibrium to command a premium, given its electronic groupset and custom components. The current Equilibrium model with a mechanical 105 groupset retails for £2,699.99, so the production version of this prototype will likely be significantly more expensive.
The other two prototypes, the revamped Fugio gravel bike and the intriguing 32"-wheeled Vagabond, are also expected to hit the market later in 2026. While we don't have pricing details yet, we can anticipate a range of specifications and options, including budget-friendly mixed component models and higher-end Shimano CUES groupsets.
And this is the part most people miss... Genesis has a reputation for delivering exceptional value, so while these bikes may carry a higher price tag, you can be sure you're getting a well-crafted, high-performance machine.
So, what do you think? Are you excited about these new Genesis prototypes? Do you think the custom steel frameset will deliver the promised performance? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
