Frank Smith on Jai Opetaia's Move to Zuffa Boxing: Matchroom CEO's Reaction (2026)

In a bold move that has stirred the boxing world, Matchroom Boxing's CEO Frank Smith has publicly commented on Jai Opetaia's recent decision to sign with Dana White and Zuffa Boxing. This shift not only highlights Opetaia's rising star status but also signals Dana White's increasing ambitions in the boxing scene.

Just last week, Opetaia revealed that he will be collaborating with Zuffa Boxing alongside his long-time co-promoter Tasman Fighters. This partnership marks a significant step forward for Zuffa as it prepares to launch its boxing division, with its inaugural event set for Friday night at the UFC APEX, where Callum Walsh will take on Carlos Ocampo in the main event for the first Paramount Plus broadcast, with more events already in the pipeline.

For Dana White, securing Opetaia—a fighter recognized as a future contender for undisputed titles at 200 pounds and potentially a heavyweight powerhouse—represents a remarkable achievement.

Matchroom began their collaboration with Opetaia and Tasman Fighters back in July 2023. Although they were not involved in his latest title defense against Huseyin Cinkara, they had previously teamed up with the Australian fighter for several bouts, including earlier world title defenses.

During an interview with IFL TV, Smith shared his thoughts regarding Opetaia's departure, adopting a philosophical perspective about the nature of promotional relationships in boxing. He stated, "It is what it is. Fighters come, fighters go. In boxing, the ideal scenario is to have someone who is fully dedicated to you and willing to do whatever it takes for your success. However, it's also essential to recognize that this is a commercial business.

"You need to adopt a long-term view, which not everyone is able to do. This is not the first instance of such a situation occurring, and it certainly won't be the last."

Acknowledging the disappointment of losing a talented fighter, Smith emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and looking towards future opportunities. "There are countless prospects ahead. While we don’t have an infinite budget, as running a business requires financial sustainability, we remain committed to our goals.

"I’m not dismissing Opetaia’s significance; rather, I’m suggesting that we now need to concentrate on the 94 other fighters we currently represent. While Jai Opetaia is indeed a fantastic fighter, there may be others out there who, although perhaps not as skilled, could offer even greater commercial potential."

Frank Smith’s message is unequivocal: despite the disruption caused by Zuffa's entry into the boxing arena, Matchroom's commitment remains steadfastly focused on the fighters they still represent and on advancing their business interests.
