Imagine waking up one morning, only to realize the medication you rely on to manage your health is nowhere to be found. This isn’t a distant nightmare—it’s a harsh reality for many, including Meredith from East Yorkshire, who found herself with just nine tablets of her essential medication, Levothyroxine, left. Her desperate search for more turned into a stressful, time-consuming ordeal. 'It’s incredibly frustrating,' she shared, after spending an entire morning calling chemists within a 50-mile radius, only to find two split packs. But here’s where it gets even more alarming: Meredith’s struggle isn’t an isolated incident. From ADHD medications to cancer treatments, statins, opioid painkillers, anaesthetics, and antibiotics, drug shortages have become a persistent global crisis. In the UK alone, 124 drugs are currently in short supply, down from 142 in February 2025, according to MIMS, an industry reference guide. And this is the part most people miss: even common medications like aspirin are affected. In January, the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) revealed that 86% of surveyed pharmacies couldn’t supply aspirin to patients. This raises a critical question: Why are so many people struggling to access life-saving medicines? The NPA has called on the government to scrap a law preventing pharmacists from substituting prescriptions when stock is low. Meanwhile, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) claims it’s investing up to £520 million to boost domestic production and strengthen supply chains. But is this enough? While cutting red tape and investing in manufacturing are steps in the right direction, the issue remains complex.
