Connor Zilisch Shines Bright With His First Victory at the Pennzoil 250
In a thrilling moment that many racing fans will remember, Connor Zilisch achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the Pennzoil 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race on July 26 at the renowned Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This victory not only marked his first triumph at this legendary venue but also added to his already impressive track record.
Although this was Zilisch's inaugural win at what is often dubbed the Racing Capital of the World, it wasn’t his first time stepping onto the podium at IMS. In fact, he previously secured a third-place finish in the highly competitive 90-car Spec Miata class during the 2021 SCCA Runoffs held at the same location. Moreover, in 2024, he celebrated another podium finish as part of the Era Motorsport team, which clinched third place in the LMP2 category at the IMSA TireRack.com Battle on the Bricks. His recent success in the Xfinity Series adds yet another impressive achievement to his résumé, especially considering that he had just turned 19 only four days prior to race weekend.
During the race, the rookie sensation showcased his skills with a breathtaking late-race surge in the No. 88 WeatherTech Chevrolet, co-owned by none other than Dale Earnhardt Jr. Zilisch managed to outpace fellow rookie Taylor Gray with just two laps to go, ultimately crossing the finish line ahead of pole sitter Sam Mayer by a mere .339 seconds. Not only was this victory significant for him personally, as it represented his third consecutive win and fifth of the season, but it also marked a historic milestone—the 100th win for JR Motorsports.
"This is awesome!" exclaimed Zilisch after his victory. "Those bricks look really kissable, and I’m ready to kiss them. Winning at Indy is incredible, and achieving 100 wins for JRM is pretty cool too. I consider today to be truly special."
Finishing in third place was Gray in the No. 54 Operation 300 Toyota, followed closely by NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson in the No. 17 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet. Ryan Sieg rounded out the top five in the No. 39 Sci Aps Ford.
The race took an interesting turn in its final laps when a rain delay interrupted the action for the second time, causing a caution period from Lap 92 to 96 after a collision involving Austin Hill and Aric Almirola. Upon resuming the race on Lap 97, Gray quickly overtook Zilisch with a powerful push into Turn 1. However, Zilisch did not back down; he countered swiftly, diving underneath Gray in Turn 2 and pulling alongside him as the cars raced down the backstretch. Yet, Gray was able to fend off Zilisch’s advance.
The crucial moment arrived on Lap 99 when Zilisch executed the same maneuver exiting Turn 2, but this time, Mayer latched onto Zilisch’s rear bumper, providing the necessary aerodynamic boost to help Zilisch clear Gray as they entered Turn 3. Mayer also managed to pass Gray, but Zilisch maintained control for the final lap and a half, securing his victory. Throughout the race, Zilisch led a total of 19 laps, overcoming an early setback caused by a slow pit stop that had initially dropped him down the leaderboard.
Up until the latter stages of the race, it appeared that Justin Allgaier and Kyle Larson were the front-runners. However, during the Lap 87 restart, Larson veered high into Turn 2, making contact with Allgaier, which sent the No. 7 Hellmann’s Spicy Mayo Chevrolet crashing into the SAFER Barrier. This incident eliminated Allgaier, who had led a race-high 37 laps and was aiming for his second Pennzoil 250 victory. The collision also hampered Larson's momentum, allowing Zilisch and Gray to seize control of the race.
Ultimately, Zilisch’s victory was a significant achievement, not only for himself but also for JR Motorsports, as he continues to build a promising career in racing.
