NEW YORK — The Unrivaled League's Most Valuable Player (MVP) was announced on Monday, and it's none other than Las Vegas Aces star guard Chelsea Gray. Gray, who plays for Rose BC, accepted the award before the semifinal games at the sold-out Barclays Center.
"I want to thank everyone who voted," Gray said. "I love this game and want to be great every night. Women's basketball is where it's at, and all of you coming out to watch us compete every night shows that."
Gray, who won the Unrivaled 1-on-1 tournament last month, had an impressive season. She averaged 24.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 6.1 assists, breaking her own league single-season assists record with 85 in 14 games. She had nine games with 20 or more points and 10 games with five or more assists. Additionally, she tied the league single-game 3-pointers record with 10.
The championship game, which will be played on Wednesday at Unrivaled's home arena in Miami, will see a familiar face. Kelsey Plum, a former Aces star and now with the Los Angeles Sparks, led the No. 1-seeded Phantom BC to the championship game with an 83-75 win over Vinyl. Dearica Hamby, another former Aces player and current Sparks player, led Vinyl with 30 points.
In the other semifinal, Arike Ogunbowale, celebrating her 29th birthday, hit a crucial 3-pointer to lift the second-seeded Mist to a 73-69 victory over Breeze. The championship game will determine the winner of the $600,000 prize pool, which will be split among the six players of the winning team.
Unrivaled's success in Philadelphia in late January, where they drew over 21,490 fans, led to a move to New York for the semifinals. Monday's star-studded crowd of 18,261 included basketball legends Carmelo Anthony and Sue Bird, actors Ashton Kutcher and Jason Sudeikis, and gold medal-winning U.S. hockey player Hilary Knight.
