Mail-in semen analysis kits are revolutionizing fertility testing for men in northern Ontario. Toronto-based company Flow Labs has launched a new service that allows patients to collect a semen sample at home and courier it to an accredited laboratory for analysis. This innovative approach aims to overcome the barriers of traditional in-clinic testing, which can be delayed due to logistics and embarrassment. Dr. Karen Splinter, an obstetrician-gynecologist, highlights the issue of patients avoiding in-clinic testing due to embarrassment, a concern that is particularly relevant in the context of self-swabbing for HPV screening. The new kit addresses this by enabling patients to collect samples at home, making it more accessible and less intimidating. The kit's unique feature is its ability to separate motile sperm from non-motile sperm at the time of collection, allowing for accurate analysis days later. This is a significant improvement over traditional testing, where sperm motility declines quickly after collection, requiring samples to be provided at or near a lab. Dr. Keith Jarvi, a urologist, emphasizes the impact of this new service on rural and northern patients, stating that it will improve access to care and save time. Flow Labs' president, Murray Klien, explains that the kit provides the same information as in-clinic semen analysis, including sperm count, movement, and morphology. While the company is not currently making a profit, the goal is to grow the service and eventually increase prices to become profitable. The mail-in semen analysis kits are a significant step forward in making fertility testing more accessible and convenient for men in northern Ontario.
