TrendForce data reveals that demand for RAM chips outstrips supply by a staggering 10%, with manufacturers paying up to 50% more for DRAM (dynamic random access memory) this quarter alone. Worse still, prices are projected to surge another 40% next quarter, with no relief in sight until at least 2026.
But why is AI such a memory hog? AI data centers rely on vast amounts of memory to support their advanced graphics processing units (GPUs), which train and run complex models. ‘AI workloads are built around memory,’ explains Sanchit Vir Gogia, CEO of Greyhound Research. Unlike traditional computing, AI demands persistent, high-bandwidth memory that can’t be scaled back without compromising performance. This isn’t a fleeting trend—it’s a fundamental shift in how technology consumes resources.
Here’s the catch: as chipmakers like Micron Technology pivot to meet AI’s lucrative demand for high-end memory, other sectors—personal computers, smartphones, gaming, and consumer electronics—are left scrambling. Micron’s recent earnings report highlights this shift, with CEO Sanjay Mehrotra predicting sustained shortages. Meanwhile, companies like Dell Technologies are already warning customers of impending price hikes. ‘There’s no way this won’t affect consumers,’ admits COO Jeff Clarke.
And this is where it gets even more contentious: the memory chip industry is hitting a wall. By 2026, existing factories will max out their production capacity, according to Wu. Micron’s new Idaho facility, slated for 2027, offers a glimmer of hope—but it’s years away. Until then, suppliers will likely keep raising prices, leaving consumers and businesses footing the bill.
